Come and join us for one of the iconic hikes in the Adirondacks.  Indian Head is a pair of wide ledges that are about 5 miles in that overlooks the long and narrow Lower Ausable Lake.  No matter what time of year it is, this is one of the more beautiful hikes in the park.

We will be hiking during the start of the winter shoulder season. Microspikes will be required as we may face some icy spots and I am able to lend out 1 pair for mens size 10 or so boots.  I don't expect to need them but there is a small possibility that snowshoes would be handy.  If snowshoes are needed, I will reach out before the hike, and I have a few pairs I can lend out.  The general gear list I recommend can be found here.

We will be meeting at the AMR parking lot.  The hike in will be a couple miles of Lake Road and then we go up the gorgeous Gill Brook trail and will visit a couple scenic points with absolutely beautiful waterfalls.  We will then turn on to the trail to Inidian Head, climb up to the small ridge and get some previews of what we will see on the ledges before we finally go down to the ledges.

Once we have our fill of the ledges, we will take the short way down to the road, go and cross the bridge at the dam, and see Rainbow Falls.  We can do it from the top by going briefly up the Weld trail, and the bottom with a short hike in on a herd path.  At this point, we can go back via the road (what is on the map), or go back via the west river trail stopping at Beaver Meadows Falls on the way.

In the end, this hike is about 10 miles and  just over 2000 feet of elevation.  While it is a long distance, the trails overall are relatively easy to hike, with nothing technical, only a couple short steep spots.

Rain date will be Sunday the 8th.
